American Standard HVAC Age by Serial Number
Enter the serial number from your American Standard furnace, AC or heat pump's data plate to get its manufacture date, remaining life, warranty and recall status, and a repair-or-replace recommendation.
How to read an American Standard serial number
We can decode serial numbers from American Standard furnaces, ACs and heat pumps built 1983–2026.
2010–2026 format
From 2010 on, the first two digits of an American Standard serial are the year and the next two are the week, so a serial starting 2349 was made in week 49 of 2023. A full serial from this period looks like 23494053FA.
2002–2009 format
From 2002 to 2009 the serial has nine characters. The first digit is the last digit of the year, the next two are the week and the fourth is the day, so an American Standard AccuClean serial starting 7222 was made in week 22 of 2007. These are fiscal weeks, so the month can be a few days off.
1983–2001 format Corroborated
From 1983 to 2001 an American Standard serial has nine characters and starts with a letter for the year, followed by two digits for the week. For example, a serial starting R21 was made in week 21 of 2000. Year letters: W 1983, X 1984, Y 1985, S 1986, B 1987, C 1988, D 1989, E 1990, F 1991, G 1992, H 1993, J 1994, K 1995, L 1996, M 1997, N 1998, P 1999, R 2000, Z 2001.
This format is confirmed by two or more independent references rather than an American Standard document for this product line, so treat dates from it as likely rather than certain.

Register online within 60 days of installation to get American Standard's Registered Limited Warranty, usually 10 years on parts; without registration the Base Limited Warranty usually lasts 5 years. If the installation date wasn't recorded on the invoice, coverage is counted from 60 days after the manufacture date shown by the serial number. A registered warranty can be transferred to a new owner within 90 days of a home sale for a one-time $99 fee (units registered before Aug. 1, 2011 can't be transferred). Florida: from July 1, 2024, skipping registration doesn't shorten the warranty.

Should you repair or replace it?
Once you decode your unit, we compare its age against its typical life, a typical major repair against the cost of replacing it, and, with your model and state, what a new unit would save on energy. A common rule of thumb: if a repair costs more than about 30–50% of a replacement and the unit is past mid-life, replacing usually wins.
