ICP HVAC Age by Serial Number

Enter the serial number from your ICP furnace, AC or heat pump's data plate to get its manufacture date, remaining life, warranty and recall status, and a repair-or-replace recommendation.

How to read an ICP serial number

We can decode serial numbers from ICP furnaces, ACs and heat pumps built 1990–2013 and 2015–2026. We can't decode units built in 2014 yet.

2000–2013 format

ICP builds Heil, Tempstar, Comfortmaker, Arcoaire, KeepRite, Day & Night and Airquest units, and their serials come in two layouts. Serials that start with a letter: the letter is followed by the two-digit year and then the week of the year, so L004112345 was made in week 41 of 2000. The last five digits are a sequence number. We can't yet date letter-first serials from 2014 or later.

1990–1999 format Corroborated

Inter-City Products units from the 1990s (sold as Heil, Tempstar, Comfortmaker, Arcoaire, KeepRite and others) use the same layout: a letter, then the two-digit year and the week of the year, then five digits. For example, R920500318 was made in week 5 of 1992.

ICP documents this layout for its 2000s units, and independent references, including 1990s data plates with a printed build date, agree that 1990s Inter-City Products units use it too. Treat the date as likely rather than certain.

2015–2026 format

Serials that start with four digits: the first two digits are the week and the next two are the year, so 0118E00001 was made in week 1 of 2018. The fifth character is a letter for the factory, followed by a five-digit sequence number.

ICP furnace, AC or heat pump recalls

Recalls come from the U.S. Consumer Product Safety Commission. Decode your unit above to check whether its model and serial fall inside a recall.

Should you repair or replace it?

Once you decode your unit, we compare its age against its typical life, a typical major repair against the cost of replacing it, and, with your model and state, what a new unit would save on energy. A common rule of thumb: if a repair costs more than about 30–50% of a replacement and the unit is past mid-life, replacing usually wins.
